Future Energy Management
FortisBC will use the Next Generation Home for a study on the management of high energy demand in the future.
Energy use in BC is rising continuously. We will have to find ways of storing energy in times of low demand so we can use it when needed. More information on the FortisBC Peak Demand Study is coming soon. Make sure to sign up for updates.

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)
Have you heard of RNG? It’s the same fuel that already heats homes around BC, but it comes from renewable sources. RNG is delivered to homes by FortisBC, just like conventional gas. No need to change your appliances or do anything differently.
How does it work? Organic waste, like food scraps or cow manure, is allowed to rot in an oxygen-free, temperature-controlled environment. In Kelowna, gases are collected from the landfill, purified, and injected into the FortisBC delivery system. Naturally occurring bacteria break down the organic waste in the landfill, releasing biogas, which is a mix of gases, including methane. The final product is made up of methane and a small amount of nitrogen, making it almost indistinguishable from conventional natural gas.
